and all messages directed to ID number [76057,101] will receive a reply the
same day.
If you require faster service you may dial 817-265-5619 from 8 am to 10 pm
Central Time 7 days a week and leave a message in the Dragons Eye Software
mailbox. Your call will be returned on the same day. Please leave your full
name and phone number (with area code) and a short description detailing the
type of help you require.
Use and Registration
You are hereby granted permission to use K-Free for a trial period no longer
than 21 days. If, after the trial period expires, you continue to use K-Free,
you MUST register the program. Registration entitles you to one free upgrade

manual does not) and will disable the registration screen. You will also be
notified when new products from Dragons Eye Software are available. Please see
the file: ORDER.DOC for registration and volume discount information.
If more than one person will be using K-Free at one time then each copy MUST be
registered. Please see the file: PRODUCT.INF for volume discount information.

Program Registration
If you have not yet registered K-Free, the dialog box shown above will be
displayed each time you run the program. From this dialog you can either click
Register to enter your registration number or you can skip the registration and
go straight to K-Free.
If you choose to register K-Free, you should click on Register to bring up the
following dialog.
Type your registration number in the Registration # field and your name in the
Name field. The registration number that you enter should exactly match the
one given to you by Dragons Eye Software. When you press Ok K-Free will verify
and save your registration information, and the registration dialog will never
again appear.
If you press Cancel, the registration information will not be saved. The
registration dialog will continue to appear when K-Free is run.
The following dialog will appear if the registration number is valid and the
registration process has been completed without any errors.
K-Free Help
The above dialog will appear when Alt-H is pressed from the main window or Help
is selected from the Options dialog. K-Free help contains a short description
of all the commands available within K-Free, along with instructions concerning
each of the commands.
The scroll bar is used to bring additional help text into view by clicking on
either the up or down arrows. K-Free does not use the Windows help system
because the amount of text used within Help is small, and the additional
overhead required by the Windows help system would offset the benefits of
including an online help facility within K-Free.
K-Free Main Window
The K-Free main window is composed of several elements, all of which may or may
not be displayed depending on the options chosen from the Options dialog. All
of the possible elements are outlined below.
The first element is the Windows Info section which is composed of several
items. Windows Info will display the mode that Windows is currently running in
(Protected or Real). If Windows is running in Protected mode, K-Free will show
that Windows is in either Standard or 386 Enhanced mode. K-Free will also
display your machine's CPU type (the one shown here is a 80286) and whether or
not you have a math coprocessor installed in your machine.
The next element is Memory. In this section K-Free displays the amount of
memory free under Windows. If you have Expanded Memory (EMS) installed in your
system or set up through the use of an EMS driver, K-Free will display the
amount of EMS memory free and the EMS driver version.
The third element is the Largest Block of free memory available from Windows.
This allows you to see how much contiguous memory is available from Windows to
the programs currently running. Often this number is a more accurate indicator
of free memory as the Windows Memory number includes all free memory, some of
which may not be readily available to applications.
The fourth element is the number of tasks currently running on your system.
This number indicates how many applications are executing and may be used to
detect programs that are running in the background.
The fifth element is Drive information for all the drives selected in the
Options dialog. Each selected drive will be on its own line with the amount of
free space shown on the right side as either Kilobytes or Megabytes (K or M).
K-Free will display information for up to 10 drives.
The final element is the Help line that is displayed at the top of the window.
This line is intended to help beginning users and may be turned off from the
Options dialog. All the elements of the main window may be turned on and off
at will by the user from the Options dialog.
K-Free Commands
To open the Options menu:
With the mouse: Double click with the left mouse button while the mouse cursor
is inside the K-Free window.

other windows on the screen) press ALT-O.
To move the K-Free window:
With the mouse: place the cursor within the help bar and hold down the left
mouse button. The cursor will change to a four-pointed cursor, and you may
move the K-Free window anywhere on the screen while holding down the left mouse
button.
With the keyboard: While the K-Free window has the focus press ALT-F7. The
cursor will change to a four-pointed cursor, and you may move the K-Free window
anywhere on the screen using the cursor keys. Press the return key when you
have moved it to its new position.
To close K-Free:
With the mouse: Double click with the right mouse button while the mouse
cursor is anywhere within the K-Free window.
With the keyboard: While the K-Free window has the focus press ALT-F4.
K-Free Options
1. Memory
When Memory is selected, K-Free displays the total amount of memory available.
If you have EMS memory in your system, the amount of available EMS memory will
also be displayed, along with the EMS driver version. The amount of total RAM
shown does not reflect the difference in the amount of RAM available as opposed
to the size of your disk swap area (if you are using Windows in 386 Enhance
mode). In other words, if you have a 4 Meg swap file and you have 4 Meg of RAM
on your system, K-Free may display 8 Meg as the amount of memory available.
2. Drive
Selecting Drive causes K-Free to display the number of bytes free on the
selected drive(s) in either kilobytes or megabytes depending on the actual
amount free. If you have less than 10 Meg free on the selected drive, K-Free
will display the number as Kilobytes; otherwise, you will see the amount
represented in Megabytes. You select the drive or drives to monitor from the
Options menu by selecting Drive mode and clicking on one or more drives in the
listbox. K-Free will display the space free for up to 10 drives at one time.
3. Stay on Top
Selecting the Stay on Top option causes K-Free to remain above all the other
windows that are currently visible on the windows desktop, regardless of which
window has the input focus.
4. Largest Block
When this option is selected K-Free will display the Largest Block of memory
that is available to Windows applications. This value is often a more accurate
indicator of available memory than the number that is available through the
Program Manager as it represents the largest contiguous block of memory that may
be requested by applications running under Windows.
5. Win Info
Selecting Win Info will display the mode that Windows is currently running in
(Protected or Real). If Windows is running in Protected mode, K-Free will show
that Windows is in either Standard or 386 Enhanced mode. K-Free will also
display your machine's CPU type and whether or not you have a math coprocessor
installed in your machine.
6. Hide Help
This option, when selected, will cause K-Free to hide the main window line that
reads: "Press Alt-H for help" so that experienced users will only see the
information that they need. Hide Help is de-selected by default.
7. Iconic
Selecting Iconic causes the main K-Free display to appear in its' smallest form.
The main window will only take up as much space as is needed to display the
information that you have selected. For example, the window shown above is
what would appear if you had selected the options as shown in the Options dialog
above. If you have selected Win Info then the Windows information will not
appear when Iconic is selected, as there would not be enough room to display
all the Windows information text.
8. Tasks
Selecting Tasks causes K-Free to display the number of applications that are
running in Windows. This number can be used to track any applications that may
be running on your system that do not usually need your attention. (TSR type
applications primarily).
9. Save Settings
Selecting Save Settings causes K-Free to save the current Options dialog
settings when K-Free is closed. Save Settings is off by default.
10. Change Colors
Clicking on Change Colors will bring up the Colors dialog box, where you may
change the colors that are used in the main window.
11. About K-Free
Clicking on About K-Free will cause the About box for K-Free to appear. The
K-Free about box displays the registration number and name of the registered
individual if a registered version of K-Free is being executed.
12. Drives listbox
The Drives listbox should be used to select the drives that you want to monitor
with K-Free. Only the first 10 will be used. Any drives past the tenth will
be ignored by K-Free.
Color Dialog
The Color dialog is used to change the text and background colors of the main
window. You may select an object and click on Set Color to change its color. A
representation of the main window is continuously visible at the bottom of the
dialog box.
In order to change a particular color, you should select one of the radio
buttons in the upper left of the dialog. By using the scroll bars you can
create any color that is available under Windows. To accept the color you have
created into the main window object you should click on Set Color. When you
have finished changing the colors, press Ok to accept the changes or Cancel to
abort.
Saving the current settings
Selecting Save Settings from the Options dialog will cause K-Free to save the
current settings to the KFREE.INI file when K-Free is exited. This option
should be used when you move K-Free to another part of the screen or you change
one of the display options, so that K-Free will display these settings when you
next execute K-Free. Please note that when you run K-Free the Save Settings
option is de-selected, and you must re-select it in order for your current
session settings to be saved when you close K-Free or exit Windows.
Command Line Parameters
The command line syntax for K-Free is as follows:
KFREE [drive...]
where [drive...] is one or more optional drive letters followed by colons.
These drives will be monitored by K- Free upon startup.
For example, choosing "Run" from the Program Manager and typing in the following
line:
KFREE C: D: E:
will cause K-Free to monitor drives: C, D and E and display the bytes free for
each drive. If no parameters are put on the K-Free command line, K-Free will
begin by displaying current settings as saved in the KFREE.INI file.
***************************** NOTE *****************************
If you try to enter the above example on either the "RUN=" or "LOAD=" lines in
the WIN.INI file you will get error messages from Windows. These messages occur
because Windows expects program names only on these lines. If you want K-Free
to run when you start Windows, you should use "Run" from Dragons Eye Software.
Run allows you to execute one or more programs at the same time and give each
program its own command line.
KFREE.INI Options
There are several options which may be set within the KFREE.INI file. These
options and their usage are outlined below.
CommandLine= should be set to the options that you want K-Free to use when
K-Free is started with a blank command line. Any option that is valid for the
normal K-Free command line may be used here. All commands should be enclosed
in quotes. CommandLine= by default, is set to "C:" in the distributed INI
file.
Xloc= is the X location of the upper left corner of the K-Free window.
Generally you should not alter this line; although, you can safely set it to
"0" as it is by default.
Yloc= is the Y location of the upper left corner of the K-Free window.
Generally you should not alter this line; although, you can safely set it to
"0" as it is by default.
Memory= should be set to 1 if you want K-Free to display available memory upon
startup, or 0 if you do not want memory information displayed.
Drive= should be set to 1 to display drive information, or set to 0 to turn the
drive option off.
LBlock= should be set to 1 to display the largest block information, or set to 0
to turn Largest Block off.
Winfo= should be set to 1 to display Windows information, or set to 0 to turn
Windows information off.
OnTop= should be set to 1 for K-Free to appear on top of the other windows on
the screen.
ShowHelp= should be set to 1 to enable the display of the help line at the top
of the K-Free window, or set to 0 to disable the help line.
Iconic= should be set to 1 to turn Iconic mode on, or set to 0 to turn it off.
Tasks= should be set to 1 to turn the task # display on, or set to 0 to turn it
off.
The other settings in the K-Free INI file are automatically set by K-Free and
should not be altered manually. *** When you exit from K-Free the current
settings will be saved to the INI file only if you have selected "Save
Settings" in the Options dialog box during the current K-Free session.
